About Richard Behlmann
Mr. Behlmann is Board Certified in Estate Planning & Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. As such the focus of his practice is estate planning, business counseling and wealth preservation. His recent book, Avoid the Five Biggest Mistakes in Estate Planning is an easy to read guide designed to point out common misconceptions and errors in estate planning.
Mr. Behlmann was formerly a practicing CPA and Tax Consultant with both Alexander Grant and Touche, Ross & Company, now part of the largest CPA firms in the world. All estate planning reviews include a discussion of tax considerations. Asset protection and minimizing tax and administrative concerns are always the prime objectives in any plan no matter the size of your estate.
Having grown up in a family business, Mr. Behlmann is aware that business and the family are closely tied together. Selling or transferring your business to the next generation involves complex personal and business considerations. His background provides special knowledge of the issues involved in planning for the transfer or sale of a business, ranch or farm.
As a member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys, he works with over 100 law firms around the country and can assist clients with state and local laws related to planning for assets and operations outside of Texas. Through proper business and tax planning, his skills have helped business owners start, grow and transfer their dynamic enterprises.
In his role as business counselor, Mr. Behlmann has engaged in over $2 billion in acquisitions and business combinations. One major accomplishment was the development and implementation of the first large-scale managed care health plan in 1986, which both improved benefit levels and reduced cost for over 90,000 employees. A former corporate general counsel Mr. Behlmann has been responsible for the design and operation of retirement and welfare benefit plans for one of the largest companies in the world. He knows that retirement plans are a critical part of a good estate plan.
Early in his career Mr. Behlmann was also a prosecuting attorney for St. Louis County, MO.
Mr. Behlmann has lived in the Katy, Texas area for 20 years, along with his wife Elaine and their three sons. His law degree is from the St. Mary’s University, in San Antonio and his accounting and finance degree is from St. Louis University. He is a member of the Texas Bar, the Missouri Bar, the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, The Texas Bar College and has served as a member of the Texas Bar Association Securities Law Committee and as an adviser to the United Kingdom Radiocommunications Agency Fixed Wireless Consultative Committee.

The Academy is a national organization dedicated to promoting excellence in estate planning by providing its exclusive membership of attorneys with up-to-date research on estate and tax planning, educational materials, and other important resources to empower them to provide superior estate planning services.
